Income trusts: why kill the golden goose of tax revenue? By BRENT FULLARD TORONTO—An Environics poll conducted between Feb. 5-10 found that 79.6 per cent of Canadians support the inclusion of the Marshall Savings Plan (MSP) in Budget 2010 to "Stop the income trust bleeding" (see Stanbury, The Hill Times, Feb. 8, 2010). Full poll details are available at MarshallPlan.ca. The poll was commissioned by the Canadian Association of Income Trust Investors/Taxpayers, which I head up. A plug for tax leak Barry Critchley, Financial Post February 13, 2010 More evidence emerged yesterday of what Canadians care about, aside from the Olympics. Marshall Plan Needed Robert Bertuzzi, On October 31, 2006 Mr. Flaherty, our Minister of Finance, declared that the Federal Government would start double taxing Income Trusts beginning in 2011, as he claimed that income trusts were a source of tax leakage. Income Trust Fix This is a brilliant idea for the Tories to save face over their income trust fiasco as well as to provide pension-like income plus taxes in an era of deficits.
